Τα 3200 χρόνια είναι πολλά και καθυστερούμε πολύ να βρούμε τα ανάκτορα του Αχιλλέα στην Ομηρική Φθία. Ο τρίτης γενεάς Ελληνο-αμερικανός καθηγητής James-Dimitri Brianas, από το Πανεπιστήμιο της Florida πρόεδρος του Achilles Foundation [www.achilles-thessaly.org] έχει βάλλει σκοπό της ζωής του να βρεθούν τα ανάκτορα του μακρινού προγόνου μας, που αποτέλεσε το κεντρικό πρόσωπο της Ιλιάδας, του ομηρικού έπους που περισσότερο από κάθε άλλο βιβλίο έχει διαδοθεί σε ολόκληρη της υφήλιο.

Κινητοποιεί ευαισθητοποιημένους ανθρώπους στον τόπο του Αχιλλέα, έχει συγκροτήσει το συμβούλιο για τον Αχιλλέα που απαρτίζεται από αξιόλογους συντοπίτες μας, πραγματοποιεί επαφές με αρχές της περιοχής και δεν παύει να εργάζεται για το μεγάλο στόχο που δεν έχει μόνον επιστημονικό, αρχαιολογικό ή ιστορικό ενδιαφέρον, αλλά μέσα στις σκέψεις και τις ιδέες του καθηγητή περιλαμβάνονται και αντικείμενα με παράπλευρο αλλά ουσιαστικό και άμεσο ενδιαφέρον.
Με στελέχη της Αυτοδιοίκησης συζητήθηκε η ιδέα να τοποθετηθεί στην Εθνική οδό πριν τη Λαμία μία πινακίδα που θα πληροφορεί τον διερχόμενο ότι εισέρχεται στην πατρίδα του Αχιλλέα «Welcome to the Homeland of Achilles”. Να εξευρεθεί χώρος για επισκέπτες, για σπουδαστές, για την πραγματοποίηση διαλέξεων. Να πραγματοποιούνται περιοδικά επισκέψεις από ομάδες ενδιαφερομένων, από κάθε γωνιά της Γης. Και διευκρινίζει: Δεν σκοπεύουμε να ελέγξουμε τη δραστηριότητα των αρχαιολόγων, αλλά μπορούμε να βοηθήσουμε τους Έλληνες και την οικονομία της περιοχής αναδεικνύοντας δυνατότητες αξιοποίησης αυτού του θέματος.

Congratulations on your new web site, “www.skamnosvoice.gr.” I know Greece and many other European countries continue to struggle with their economies affecting the lives of many people as it has my relatives in Thessaly. It has also harmed the work of “The Achilles Foundation” at Pharsala. You will recall, the mayor, Aris Karachalios, in July 2011 donated to my Foundation a building in Pharsala, for 20 years, to serve as an “Achilles Research and Education Center.” In 2012 the mayor took the building back citing the poor economy. While permits were obtained by the University of Florida who began our research last year, bureaucratic struggles in our search for Achilles continue. The loss of the “Center” also hinders our work to bring scholars, students, and others interested in Achilles and the history of ancient Thessaly.
You know from my “Strategic Plan” that I believe research should include all of the Kingdom of Achilles from Pharsala to the Sperchiou River. As such, the work you and I began at Lamia in June 2011 to also focus on the Sperchiou area is the right thing to do. While difficulties continue, the time to resurrect Achilles is long overdue – 3200 years is long enough. The meetings we had with the deputy mayor and deputy governor as well as with the Ephor of the Ministry of Culture at the castle were very important. You helped so much on this. I know concerns later arose but we need to revisit this effort. I would like to rethink those plans that include placing a sign at Lamia along the National Highway: “Welcome to the Homeland of Achilles.” Maybe a business there would help us, a business where tourists stop to eat. The business could later sell little statues of Achilles and other souvenirs. I would also like to revisit our discussions on promoting a 2-week “Achilles Tour” of Greece. We may not control the archaeology but we can control helping the Greek people and economy by promoting business.
My meeting in June 2011 with the “Council of Achilles” (Mr. Euthimiou, Adamis, Kantogianni, and Makris) and our visits to ancient sites along the Sperchiou River provide an opportunity for us to partner on our work for Achilles. Maybe someone in the Lamia area can donate an office, apartment, or building for all of us to use for our work on Achilles. I hope this is possible.
One ancient site identified in Homer’s ILIAD as part of the Kingdom of Achilles is Trachina north of Skamnos, close to Heraclea. It is a large majestic mountain which as part of our work on Achilles needs investigating (you will recall I asked about this in 2006). Another majestic site is Narthaki at Limogardi east of Lamia. With its massive walls it must have been a fabulous city as it overlooks the Maliakos Gulf at the mouth of the Sperchiou River.
George, your work in publishing your newsletter, now on line, provides valuable information to all citizens. I thank you deeply for your efforts on Achilles. I do not know what my legacy in life will be, but I do know that among your many accomplishments will be your compassion, your fairness, your honesty and your duty to your community and your countrymen.
